FAQs

Q: When do classes start, and when do they meet?

A:  Classes are 10 weeks in length. Each class meets for 60 minutes once a week. You can find when new classes are beginning under the class schedule tab.  Beginner dance classes are offered every semester, and are conducted in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.  Watch our schedule for shorter workshop offered during the year.

Q: How much does it cost?

A:  Our group classes cost $160 per person for the 10-week semester. There are no long-term contracts. Try the beginner Ballroom 1 class for the first 3 weeks, there is never any further obligation to continue. Most people continue because they truly enjoy this fun, social activity!

Q: What do we learn?

A:  You will find social dancing easy to learn. Our beginning classes start with waltz, swing, rumba and foxtrot. Each class will spend time on basic patterns, but you will learn more than just dance steps. Social ballroom dancing builds skills such as leading, following, and rhythm. You will learn to become comfortable on the dance floor.

Q: Do I need a partner?

A:  No partner needed, our classes are designed for students coming as couples or singles -- everyone is welcome. We do ask singles to enroll in advance so we can try to keep an even ratio of leaders and followers.  Partner switching is encouraged, but we have an area for those who choose to stay with their home partner.  We have a partner pool for those seeking dance partner matches.

Q: How do I enroll?

A:  You can enroll in classes online under the registration tab, or by calling our office at 217-359-5333 between 1:00 - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. It is helpful if you enroll before classes begin, but you can also enroll on the first night of class. Enrollment will continue through the third week of class if you must join us late.

Q: Can I find Regent Ballroom on social media?

A:  Yes! Find us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Yelp!

Q: Where is the Regent Ballroom located?

A:  We are located just south of Champaign, west of the Savoy 16 Theatre. (You can also view a map for driving directions at the bottom of this page.)  From Champaign, you should follow Neil Street south to Burwash Avenue. Turn right on Burwash at the Twin City Honda dealership then turn left on Regency Drive West. For those who are familiar with the Savoy Theatre, the Regent Ballroom is just 2 blocks west. The Regent is clearly marked with burgundy letters on the front of the building.

Q: What do I wear?

A:  Wear something comfortable that will lend itself to free movement. We suggest avoiding clothes that are too casual, such as shorts or clothing that is too tight which restricts mobility. Don’t forget comfortable shoes! Wear a pair that will stay securely with the foot as it rises and falls. While you may find gym shoes comfortable, they have too much grip for social dancing. Leather-soled shoes are recommended if you already have them.

Q: What if I miss a lesson?

A:  As a matter of fact, we expect you to. The average student will miss a lesson or two during an 10-week semester and not fall behind. How? Each lesson, we review all the steps taught in previous lessons. We also have the entire semester on DVD -- which is a wise purchase even if you don’t fall behind. Sorry, there are no refunds or credit for missed classes.

Q: Will I be the only beginner?

A:  Of course not! Our beginning classes are specially designed for people with little or no dance experience. We strive to make everyone feel comfortable so you can have a ball!
